Two-dimensional nonplanar spontaneous rupture in heterogeneous medium

Dynamic rupture simulation by finite differences of an arbitrarily nonplanar fault crossing a circular low velocity zone (LVZ). Rupture propagation is governed by a linear slip-weakening constitutive relation. Snapshot of the horizontal particle velocity (left) four seconds after rupture nucleation.
